Faculty of Medicine

Dr Alex Scott is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. His basic science research program is investigating the optimal doses of exercise to stimulate adaptation in the musculoskeletal system, specifically, tendons. In 2018, Alex's research was awarded several NSERC grants (Discovery grant, Accelerator supplement, and Research Technology Instrumentation) to explore both basic cellular mechanisms used by tendon cells to sense and respond to exercise stimulli, as well as translational experiments to examine the process of tendon adapatatoin in people prescribed varying types and doses of exercise. Human tendon cells are studied in vitro, and the results are used to inform exercise-based interventions where tendon properties are monitored using real-time ultrsaound and biomechanical measures. This research is generating more precise exercise prescriptions based on an individual's tendon load-bearing capacity, and could be used in future to prevent activity-related injuries and/or optimize healing during rehabilitation.
