Flora To-Miles is a third-year PhD student at the University of British Columbia. She is an occupational therapist and is interested in studying how everyday activities (or “occupations”) are related to health outcomes.
Flora’s PhD study (titled “The health promoting potential of social and creative activities: An exploratory study of adults with and without inflammatory arthritis”) will examine how social and creative activities are associated with health outcomes, which will be assessed using patient-reported measures and telomere length (a biological marker of health and aging). The study will provide insights on how different types of activities are related to health. By examining the relationship between both social and creative types of activities and health outcomes, Flora hopes that this study will eventually lead to preliminary activity recommendations that can be incorporated into self-management strategies for people living with inflammatory types of arthritis.
